Best wishes for the New Year. I would like to express my profound gratitude for your tremendous efforts in 2019 and offer my sincerest wishes that 2019 is a productive and prosperous year for you.

The year of 2019 has witnessed profound changes and remarkable success. Centering on the core task by Shanghai Institute of Technology (SIT), the School of Continuing Education (SCE) and International Education Center (IEC) have firmly adhered to the guiding principle of “remaining true to our original aspiration and keeping our mission firmly in our mind—the mission to develop the continuing education in a new era” so as to actively explore an entirely new approach to develop both the causes of continuing education and international collaboration.

In 2019, the administrators of SCE and IEC have devoted themselves to the top design and implemented the principle of “taking precautions before it is too late.” Teachers, staff members as well as students have conscientiously contributed their bit to their boundless responsibility. Significant headways have been made in taking it as the primary task to enhance the quality of education and standardize the educational management, in giving a top priority to further international collaboration and expand the professional and on-the-job training, in taking it as the important goal for the year to accomplish the quota set by the university and finally in helping to build up a society in which lifelong learning is the individual’s eternal pursuit by means of the sustainable continuing education. We are much delighted to see that the standardized management of credential education has been steadily progressing, educational cooperation programs have been moving forward steadfastly, the training programs for society and enterprises have been rising by leaps and bounds, various types of examinations oriented toward all walks of life have been exerting much impact on the society and the construction of regulations and systems in SCE and IEC have been achieving the initial success. In a word, both SCE and IEC have been developing satisfactorily in the course of deepening the reform and they themselves have benefited a great deal through reform.

As President Xi Jinping noted, “A nation flourishes when its education thrives; and a nation prospers when its education is strong and powerful”. For SCE and IEC, 2020 will doubtlessly offer many opportunities for development and present a large number of challenges. The sayings of “A good harvest depends on spring sowing” and “It takes a decade to grow a tree yet it will need a century to rear a person” will be the vital driving forces for us to press forward. Being an essential part of tertiary education, we, who are working in the fields of continuing education, will firmly abide by the guiding principle of cultivating talents by following the desired moral code so as to undertake the historic mission of “educating people for the Party” and “fostering the talents for the country”; we will carry out to the letter China’s strategic decision of “One Belt, One Road”, step up our efforts to deepen educational collaboration with foreign countries with stress being laid on introducing high-end programs; we will unwaveringly explore the approach to explore “intelligence education” with a view to strengthening the network teaching mode; we will double and even redouble our efforts to target at the social and entrepreneurial needs to make what we will provide fully integrated to the needs of real production. We believe 2020 will be another milestone for the sustainable development of SCE and IEC.
